About:

As the population of the National Capital Region continues to grow, coordinated planning around future transportation facilities and services is critical. Whether you walk, cycle, roll, travel by transit or automobile, we need to hear from you!

The 2022 Origin Destination Survey is a confidential and voluntary travel survey that tells us how, why and where residents travel. Since the last household travel survey was completed in 2011, much has changed. There is a critical need to update the survey to gain a better understanding of residents' current travel patterns.

The data collected helps government agencies at the local, provincial, and federal level make informed decisions on transportation planning and investments. The survey results will be used to:

  1. update the region's travel forecasting tools;
  2. analyze how travel patterns have changed since the start of the pandemic;
  3. update local and regional transportation plans;
  4. inform future decisions about the region's transportation systems and services; and
  5. support research into current transportation issues, considering the relationship between land use, transportation and demographics.

Survey invitations will be randomly distributed to residents throughout the National Capital Region. Participants can complete the survey online or by phone.

Your participation is important!

If you received a letter from the City of Ottawa or the Ministère des Transports du Québec, you have been randomly selected to participate in the survey. You have the chance to shape our region's transportation future!

The goal of the survey is to understand where people are going, why they travel, and how they get there by collecting information on the trips made by each member of your household. The information you provide will be used to make informed decisions on future planning for walking, cycling, public transit, and roads to make it easier to get where you need to go.

It is important that we gather information from all residents regardless of the mode of transportation they use, whether walking, cycling, driving, or taking transit. We also want to hear from people regardless of how many trips they make - whether many or none at all.

Starting in September 2022, letters with details about the survey will be sent to randomly selected households. The survey will take a typical household about 10 to 25 minutes to complete. The length of the survey will depend on the number of people in your household and their travel activity.
